Duke of Edinburgh
2017-18 saw the re-introduction of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award in school, being run alongside the Westview Community Association.
After securing a substantial amount of funding we were able to send volunteers on the required training courses and cover the cost of the expedition, resulting in students being able to complete their Bronze Award at no cost to them. We had one group successfully complete the Bronze Award with their qualifying expedition taking place in the Beacon Fell area in late June 2018. This group will begin their Silver Award this year.
For those students just starting the Bronze Award this year, weekly sessions at Westview Community Association have started. The students are starting to work on their physical fitness with help from the Fleetwood Town Community Trust, as well as deciding on what they will be doing for their volunteering and skills sections. They are also starting to develop their expedition skills such as map reading and route planning, camp craft and first aid. The practice expedition will be taking place in May 2019 and the qualifying expedition in July 2019.
